Getting ready for Class

Betsy and I are teaching a beginning sewing class starting next week at the Arts Association.  "Bring a child to sew. "  We have room for 6 pair (12 people) so we need 12 machines.  Betsy loves Kenmores and these are the machines being prepped for class.  We want to have all the same style so that it will be easier to trouble shoot issues.  And Kenmores are very very easy to use.

Betsy was pretty sure that I have more machines than she does.  We counted hers today.  She has 82.  Most of hers work.  And most of hers are Kenmores.

Are we worried that we might be terribly, mentally ill?  Nope.  We would readily take 10 grand for all of our machines.  Then we could just start over again.

  1. Oh my god, I look like a hoarder, how funny, but I do love Kenmore's, just lost another on ebay.

  2. Those cases are mostly from the late 1970s; I had a 158.1347 in a case just like those. I really wish I still had it. Kenmores from that era were workhorses, simple and dependable. Older is definitely better.

  3. I had to really search to find this, but I had seen it before. Have you and Betsy seen this piece file showing manufacturing dates of Kenmore sewing machines? Enjoy!

  5. I have a Kenmore 158.1946. It's an all metal free arm with utility stitches. I love it!
And as a beginner, I loved that I was able to sew slowly with it.

Everyone has their personal preferences about sewing machines...
IMHO Singer made more attractive machines.
The Kenmore machines of the 1970s are (of course) better made than Singers of that time.

And quality is obviously what you want & need in a sewing machine.
If (god forbid!) I could only have one sewing machine it would be a vintage Kenmore from the 60s or 70s.
    They're solid, well made machines!

  6. I have been sewing for less than a year and I already have 9 sewing machines. A little of everything; White 77, 2 Singer Featherweights, Singer 237, White 1505, Kenmore 22 Stitch (1990's), Kenmore 19606, Necchi 575FA, White 1505. A friend of mine is giving me her Serger. I have so little room that they are stacked on each other. In my spare time, I admire other sewing machines and troll ebay and Cragslist. I'm not a hoarder because I actually use them.
