Singer 31-15 Shuttle Hook Assembly

Now a days, we take the hook/race/shuttle assembly apart from the front of the machine.
http://mysewingmachineobsession.blogspot.com/2012/08/complete-circle.html.

The 31-15, however, is removed from behind.  You remove the screws from the front
That whole thing lifts right out to reveal the shuttle driver.

The hook shuttle comes right out.  This photo is deceiving.  I positioned it after I took it out to demonstrate how it just comes out.
Remove that big screw and the retaining clip comes off of those pins.

Check out the 15-90.  Look familiar?  Same thing but moved to the front.

  1. I have a 31-20 , disassembled shuttle/race assembly and replaced the worn-out race with one that was lapped-in to fit the hook/shuttle, upon reassembly the position plate seems sprung-wide -- the small screws won't fit unless I wedge the plate to bring the screw-holes to fit those in the shuttle case; that done and tighten all screws and the machine binds -- like the position plate is pressing onto the shuttle/book as it tries to rotate; it can be forced to oscillate, but that doesn't seem right. Do I need to grind/polish the position plate horns or what?

  2. Thanks so much for posting this information. I just spent about two hours trying to reassemble the shuttle assembly. Finally, I read this post. Five minutes later we're golden. My new-to-me 1922 treadle 31-15 may sew again. (After I order a few parts. I was told that it worked. Ha!)

    Keep up the good work!

  3. After reading this I have hope I can reassemble my old 31-15. I have other machines to use, but my mom gave this to me just before she passed and so it means a lot to me and I have decided it deserves a total health make-over. I have hours of memories of sitting beside her, and when really little, in her lap, while she made flour-sack dresses for my sisters, shirts and pants for all of us, and this old reliable reupholstered all of the furniture that had cloth on it. So that said ... my problem is that it is as described above. The machine with the shuttle out is smooth and turns freely. but when I put the shuttle hook assembly in leaving the two screws loose, it still moves but seems to clunk at the bottom of the stroke. But once tightened, it will turn, but at the bottom of the stroke, it binds and becomes really hard to turn. I don't force it as I don't want to damage it, but for the life of me, I can't figure out why it is binding up? I am in the process of studying the pics and that may allow me to figure it out. But any ideas on when this is happening would be much appreciated.

    1. I have no idea. But if you joined the Yahoo Singer group, they may be able to help. There are lots of very knowledgeable people on that site.

  4. Hello- I am trying to replace the shuttle and hook on a 31-20. I am having trouble getting the hook around the shuttle driver once the shuttle is in place. I have tried putting the shuttle on an inserting the hook and also putting the hook and shuttle on as one unit. Either way, I cannot get the hook in place around the shuttle driver. Any suggestions?

  5. Hi, do u know how to repair the timing for a singer 31-15? My thread keeps breaking and it is driving me crazy! Thanks

    1. How do you know it is the timing? Thread breakage could be for any number of reasons. If the needle is picking up the thread, likely the timing is OK. Maybe you need to check the thread path for burs, change the needle, make sure the needle is set correctly. Look for burs on the the hook too.

  6. What is the name of the screws in the very first picture you posted here (the ones that say remove, with arrows pointing to them?? My mom's machine is missing one and I can figure out what they are called.

    1. I don't know. Singer screws are proprietary. You probably will need to find an OSMG to find a match.
