Don't let the Bobbin Winder fool ya !

Singer 28 Vibrating Shuttle Vintage 1917
Forever (well, since 2010 anyway) I thought that I could tell the difference between the Singer Vibrating shuttle models by noting the position of the bobbin winder.  I thought that in the older 27/28 models (the 28 is the 3/4 size) the bobbin winder was always positioned low on the pillar.  Now I find that is not the case.  The tension release is a more significant clue. The tension release is manual in the older 27/28s (see the little spoon shaped extension?)  In the newer 127/128s the tension releases automatically when the foot is raised.

Thanks to the folks on Vintage Sewing Machines Facebook group for teaching me this fact.

  1. That picture is almost perfect: a vintage machine, a computer and a glass of wine. Just missing the chocolate!

    1. Ahh You noticed the wine! A rather nice Bordeaux I might add.

  2. I have what I've been told is a "re-manufactured" 127 from 1907. The bobbin winder was cut from its lower position and welded back on higher and made electric. Then the whole thing was re-painted so fancy decals are gone. It is otherwise identical to my 1911 27 Sphinx treadle that I worked on with great help form your info. ID was confusing but interesting.
    Love your machine(s).

  3. I've just found your blog and had to tell you I absolutely love it. I love to read your stories of so many different sewing machines and how your repair them and bring them back to life. Thank you so much for sharing. I too thought the same about the Singer 28 model, so this is very interesting to know.

  4. Part of my tension knob is missing from my 1910 Spinnx, My bobbin winder is high. What kind of tension knob would I be looking for?
Thanks so much for your help.

  5. If I send you a picture of my machine can you tell me if it is a 28 or 128? The serial number from Singer indicates 28 and the patent number on the plate says 1910 1911 but it doesn't have the spoon shape part on the tensioner. I thought maybe it was missing from the machine when I got it years ago. Anyway thanks,I've enjoyed reading your blog, Janice my email jjges@live.com
