It looked great coming off the machine and when I placed it on the fleece backing on the frame. By the time I landed here in the quilting it was a wrinkled mess. Shit. I cut out the stitching and trimmed up both edges. Then I overlapped the edges and drew a serpentine line along the edge and cut it out. <p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-IW3gTu7d22ibzJOhRMTWDqu5eGvBI1O_R3Dk8FKHXUMqJzrgrEeXW2phv8Y0-6gHkNKLpG8lme9wLjg3z8AEJL10Vd9PGYFHicHrHfKf9b-GlKzcQV-7kVwC-JKKFFyxm1ABFwEd4FaBkMBv0jg5UYoupoOmJxw-62ygDOdxQrFilt6RhNMmeT-_-9Kx/s800/IMG_8562%20copy.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-IW3gTu7d22ibzJOhRMTWDqu5eGvBI1O_R3Dk8FKHXUMqJzrgrEeXW2phv8Y0-6gHkNKLpG8lme9wLjg3z8AEJL10Vd9PGYFHicHrHfKf9b-GlKzcQV-7kVwC-JKKFFyxm1ABFwEd4FaBkMBv0jg5UYoupoOmJxw-62ygDOdxQrFilt6RhNMmeT-_-9Kx/s16000/IMG_8562%20copy.jpeg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It's not the neatest cutout. M. named me that after she spent enough time in the studio on the longarm listening to me swear with increasing ferocity as I pieced a quilt. I don't even remember which one it was. Almost all my quilts start out as "the quilt." As I grow weary of the tedious piecing, "the quilt" becomes "the g__ Da__ quilt." Finally, as I stitch on the borders, it has morphed into "the g-- Da-- F------ quilt." I created a FB page called FMQStudios for some odd reason. Did I think I wanted to create a business? Dunno. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/LizzyKateBetz">https://www.facebook.com/LizzyKateBetz</a></p><p>Today it was the perfect August day. Sunny, breezy, and agreeable temperatures. That meant that the She Shed was habitable. I spent several hours up there stitching a practice french braid strip. I have so so so so so many scraps. I also managed to put together a 6 by 6 leaders and enders block. I wish I had the tidy gene.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoCKz9pTBYrKlfMky-UE4_doL_GyYhN3hBmR3INOM6rwVWLGACHSk8ziXvGR-D_CM1f2FoeKZB4iXXdmBUhuf1HIxTB5Acmg560PT7kw7Ksvrz6e6ED0hnZvWkV-GfWm7B2ACHzJu8OM6pUM_FiefMPcQimaW67NyUVZE8VR5RJsf-zmrPLp0apEYi7x7U/s800/IMG_8177%20copy.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoCKz9pTBYrKlfMky-UE4_doL_GyYhN3hBmR3INOM6rwVWLGACHSk8ziXvGR-D_CM1f2FoeKZB4iXXdmBUhuf1HIxTB5Acmg560PT7kw7Ksvrz6e6ED0hnZvWkV-GfWm7B2ACHzJu8OM6pUM_FiefMPcQimaW67NyUVZE8VR5RJsf-zmrPLp0apEYi7x7U/s16000/IMG_8177%20copy.jpeg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgibr70IWOJjjnXY3FXBWsKTV9-5QzYPDDPi7U-mOaqftP4Wt5XoMYGsX8kJOTYs4qSiH6XVB4ppZEaTeynB0Ai-6pLRSydv5Bop52MJoRRy6Yj8FF64MkDyc-YkG3OLUFQkGk3iyP_-JFiux5ssO-D7Jc5w8Bxkgho5dpYpBJ3Y_W9KeYhluNSNGuHkGP5/s800/IMG_8175%20copy.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="780" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgibr70IWOJjjnXY3FXBWsKTV9-5QzYPDDPi7U-mOaqftP4Wt5XoMYGsX8kJOTYs4qSiH6XVB4ppZEaTeynB0Ai-6pLRSydv5Bop52MJoRRy6Yj8FF64MkDyc-YkG3OLUFQkGk3iyP_-JFiux5ssO-D7Jc5w8Bxkgho5dpYpBJ3Y_W9KeYhluNSNGuHkGP5/s16000/IMG_8175%20copy.jpeg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtPMbrgUmnFaJ7YMEsUktyunAZYfzMROb7jeJX72BOv6ATRGUcAHQm9f_X-yRd6wohgRFDsm6SjzgmhnxTte_AvDcRSh15sddalFrhX13xh23HA6GjkW74C0eX0rb4tglYBEH1t6WvSBpZ59qrHxu2gyI3Ktwf8X0BMaUcbE8rEDqMaMenddbhHmAQLyIH/s800/IMG_8176%20copy.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtPMbrgUmnFaJ7YMEsUktyunAZYfzMROb7jeJX72BOv6ATRGUcAHQm9f_X-yRd6wohgRFDsm6SjzgmhnxTte_AvDcRSh15sddalFrhX13xh23HA6GjkW74C0eX0rb4tglYBEH1t6WvSBpZ59qrHxu2gyI3Ktwf8X0BMaUcbE8rEDqMaMenddbhHmAQLyIH/s16000/IMG_8176%20copy.jpeg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTWIbJc37aoXxfYnVUIf2q9-vU1glRkyRcJfW9W38-ASa6hMtxhRjt67MQ6CLgfm1IHri4qV8Ok8ildTTyOg-TpalfPHL7FcSXBrPINE-leo7kgLtXg49i08ni_R4Gs-tIvgfBKceLR3_wR5nPhN3iKti9XL32Coo4etlmHND7TodTqb2zIQFCNDY_cOOS/s800/IMG_8178%20copy.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTWIbJc37aoXxfYnVUIf2q9-vU1glRkyRcJfW9W38-ASa6hMtxhRjt67MQ6CLgfm1IHri4qV8Ok8ildTTyOg-TpalfPHL7FcSXBrPINE-leo7kgLtXg49i08ni_R4Gs-tIvgfBKceLR3_wR5nPhN3iKti9XL32Coo4etlmHND7TodTqb2zIQFCNDY_cOOS/s16000/IMG_8178%20copy.jpeg" /></a></div><br /><p>Last week I cleared off the 31-15 so that I could use it to bind my most recent quilt, a Round About (pattern by Donna Jordan). I love this machine. It is almost 120 years old and is in it's original treadle stand with extension table. I managed to coordinate my feet and right knee so that the balance wheel stays put when I use the knee lift mechanism. There is no back tack. I start to stitch and then simply lift the presser foot with my knee and hitch it back a couple of stitches. Works like a charm. </p><p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5E9cZ7InaPQWZ9LWAAKZ8bEsj8KsOrk7T0qN8o7YgZ4f9jkYdXiyddOR09YfdmruSUrWT97FcICU7OszuaLs0AnhXncVMU6wnHAG-sKuaMELiYDgeKWEW6Vrh8nre7rDPuokfFUy6QgWCfPKXVObPOZ0Bf4_QlLJdxUJq40Qg5HH08sF3m4HBcmxzqZ3W/s800/31-15%20piecing%20copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5E9cZ7InaPQWZ9LWAAKZ8bEsj8KsOrk7T0qN8o7YgZ4f9jkYdXiyddOR09YfdmruSUrWT97FcICU7OszuaLs0AnhXncVMU6wnHAG-sKuaMELiYDgeKWEW6Vrh8nre7rDPuokfFUy6QgWCfPKXVObPOZ0Bf4_QlLJdxUJq40Qg5HH08sF3m4HBcmxzqZ3W/s16000/31-15%20piecing%20copy.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>In this photo I am piecing some 3 1/2 inch vintage pre-cut squares. I found out that the 1/4 inch mark on the 31-15 is actually more like 3/16. No problem unless you want a true 1/4 inch seam. Which I did when I sewed the binding on to the Round About quilt. Sigh. </p><p><br /></p>Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07285943308096103980noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-133305403334770394.post-13286755724497858822022-04-11T20:43:00.006-04:002022-04-11T20:43:42.112-04:00Squeaky Nolting<p> I have a Nolting CLX 20 Long-arm. I keep a log to track hours since needle change and last oiling. It was time to oil today. I dutifully dropped one drop of oil onto each of the oil wick ports on the top of the machine head this afternoon. When I turned on the machine for warm-up I heard a distinct squeak. It drove me absolutely nuts. I waited a few minutes to see if oil would reach this squeak. Nope. </p><p>This squeak was clearly a cry for lubrication. I cut the power to the machine, turned the hand-wheel and could hear a whisper of a squeak in two spots of the full turn of the wheel. The wick ports were wet with oil. I decided that I had to get to the innards. </p><p>Now, the front of the Nolting has 6 hex screws that holds the front plate and light bar in place. Two of them are located beneath the light bar, you can't see them in this photo. The two on the left side of the photo below also hold in the back side plate.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDFVK4ZmeM85pGb3Sfw57tvcAJ7-Lu6ulj6kFH_bZykg651KAqJM7clL0zwkgkt_dxtAV1m5IpJfHgU5-QEUdxYT3U6r4qVucvsExRdJqqR8vlACvfE9rZg5iIk0Z1ed6dtUVrqpzhsn98YhnTMoyXgGBLTflDhDQi9m_17xuLWdDR4lxJx9q7-Dl9Mw/s800/Nolting%20front.HEIC" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDFVK4ZmeM85pGb3Sfw57tvcAJ7-Lu6ulj6kFH_bZykg651KAqJM7clL0zwkgkt_dxtAV1m5IpJfHgU5-QEUdxYT3U6r4qVucvsExRdJqqR8vlACvfE9rZg5iIk0Z1ed6dtUVrqpzhsn98YhnTMoyXgGBLTflDhDQi9m_17xuLWdDR4lxJx9q7-Dl9Mw/s16000/Nolting%20front.HEIC" /></a></div>Back Side plate. <div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgryR8h9IWfTLX6bNXz0W69Ina7wpDQcM6EskRZg5Ja-iCX-9fyk4WbuWZTqv9lN8LoSOBKp2TQtOg_39XD26_iYMBF5qh86_SmEEHyAD3lASFPIyguLmzeGoTxqKtiO4Y2t04N3-HT4b_5JcjBo7jc1APNXeI9txn8HFoJqVMO8U_oIgERosHOQgBULA/s800/Nolting%20side.HEIC" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgryR8h9IWfTLX6bNXz0W69Ina7wpDQcM6EskRZg5Ja-iCX-9fyk4WbuWZTqv9lN8LoSOBKp2TQtOg_39XD26_iYMBF5qh86_SmEEHyAD3lASFPIyguLmzeGoTxqKtiO4Y2t04N3-HT4b_5JcjBo7jc1APNXeI9txn8HFoJqVMO8U_oIgERosHOQgBULA/s16000/Nolting%20side.HEIC" /></a></div>I have removed the front plate in the past. It requires disconnecting the electrical harness for the light and switches. It's a bit difficult to re-connect the harness so I would prefer not to disconnect that. I discovered that if I removed the two screws on the left side of the front, I could remove the back side plate. Easy. I was able to access the innards.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivbl8u3uAeGgoHcgwi4iVqo2_P5_kIwDx1ipjdi8GssohOupujjiXcGxTwe4W_jWHq1zvS9zI57dHsKlsIzwijro6I-p_MNHVqKuZR5jytHdqMK_60zKw9nzZbylzDg9_xdJccGqZ017Hnky3BVbET3lLyvJUkm0U9bGq_QZCTcyvT5vQZoGR34ft-nA/s800/Nolting%20innards.HEIC" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivbl8u3uAeGgoHcgwi4iVqo2_P5_kIwDx1ipjdi8GssohOupujjiXcGxTwe4W_jWHq1zvS9zI57dHsKlsIzwijro6I-p_MNHVqKuZR5jytHdqMK_60zKw9nzZbylzDg9_xdJccGqZ017Hnky3BVbET3lLyvJUkm0U9bGq_QZCTcyvT5vQZoGR34ft-nA/s16000/Nolting%20innards.HEIC" /></a></div><div>This makes me happy. I like to be able to see the working parts of a machine. PS, I disconnected the power before I removed any screws. I also took out the needle. The wicks were wet and reaching their respective targets. The machine wasn't dusty with lint. As I turned the hand-wheel I oiled all the parts I could see. I don't have any idea where the squeak was but it went away. I buttoned everything back up and was back to quilting. </div><div><br /></div><div>That squeak might have gone away eventually but I like to dismantle sewing machines and I needed a distraction from quilt design. This scrappy quilt has been a challenge. At least today I accomplished something. </div><div> </div><div><br /></div><div><p> </p></div>Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07285943308096103980noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-133305403334770394.post-10544967711735493432022-02-04T18:43:00.000-05:002022-02-04T18:43:49.639-05:00Zippered Pouch <p> I have an abundance of fabric scraps. It seriously pains me to throw away fabric. I remember visiting a friend who did home decor and she threw away scraps that were huge! I mean three inches by thirty inches. WTAF?</p><p>Consequently I have bins of fabric scraps. Admittedly, I get anxious when I look at all these scraps. I am approaching my eighth decade (that means that I am almost 70) and I don't exercise daily. You figure it out. I simply cannot bring myself to discard perfectly good fabric that I paid 7 dollars a yard for. Yes, my fabric scraps are that old. There are others that are much more pricey, so there is NFW they are going into the bin. </p><p>Today I pressed and cut some 1 1/4 inch strips. Alternating dark and light appeals to me. I had an abundance of dark and not so much light. I dug out some lights, cut them into strips and proceeded to QAYG (Quilt AS You Go) a couple of zipper pouches.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjf9Hp4mAJVV5om3zcG-o5Y650H05KpYTHT3XOPjZ6luLvAcwnUlEo-4DlrdaC-SjXnr7IUwq6kuOSRlRZd6MUatBoqO9S9KCnkDgJcpb_U594GMTTMHjyNPIFWtu4iD9-6UQYZHq8zaG28KFceUWTeDCuk3vbtjIgCgGT9BRSeh4HPd2EwBQ75JSPNaA=s800" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjf9Hp4mAJVV5om3zcG-o5Y650H05KpYTHT3XOPjZ6luLvAcwnUlEo-4DlrdaC-SjXnr7IUwq6kuOSRlRZd6MUatBoqO9S9KCnkDgJcpb_U594GMTTMHjyNPIFWtu4iD9-6UQYZHq8zaG28KFceUWTeDCuk3vbtjIgCgGT9BRSeh4HPd2EwBQ75JSPNaA=s16000" /></a></div>I finished one. We got ten inches of snow last night and I had to clear the deck and the gate. Steven ran the snow blower and cleared the drive. I snowshoed (that is one weird looking word) a path around the yard so the dogs could pee and poop. <p></p><p>At this rate, if all I did was make QAYG zipper pouches I could stay busy for the rest of my life. Shipping cost more than the part but the total layout was only fifteen bucks. The machine retails for close to 200 bucks so I thought it was worth it. </p><p>It was a bit tricky putting the new tube/hose on. I don't even have a photo! It works. I found a suitable fabric within minutes of entering <a href="http://www.aquiltersgarden.net/" target="_blank">A Quilter's Garden</a>. I wandered around while Molly looked for her fabrics. I wandered upstairs and found the sale items. I was doing very well until I saw this Philip Jacobs fabric. That was it. I bought all that was left on the bolt. Yes, almost 12 yards. Of course I will use it for another OBW. I just won't be able to get to it right away. <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgRSt0e07RB4zaBrfgIRlLjlRz8to3BL2RS7QJtr7KWKe-Vj-CtOLRokHDxQgePmlWoobDL7KNVkyuBpk5vxVPh5Z9KrGFtLUvGjutfhca8uwlVc6aBwrjiBYWDyfNYaSKygiZoIDDUc_6UQ79bgOze3nP9Dejj9V2LRwjALd2kOqHVmFdOVYRfF9jPyA=s800" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="529" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgRSt0e07RB4zaBrfgIRlLjlRz8to3BL2RS7QJtr7KWKe-Vj-CtOLRokHDxQgePmlWoobDL7KNVkyuBpk5vxVPh5Z9KrGFtLUvGjutfhca8uwlVc6aBwrjiBYWDyfNYaSKygiZoIDDUc_6UQ79bgOze3nP9Dejj9V2LRwjALd2kOqHVmFdOVYRfF9jPyA=s16000" /></a></div><p></p><p> I have a quilt ready to go and Molly will have one ready in less than a week. Had I been able to start OBW 5 yesterday I might have been able to finish it by the time Molly is ready with hers. Alas, I could not. I ordered the perfect color thread from <a href="https://www.longarmsupplies.net/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA0eOPBhCGARIsAFIwTs4sHXHTTSBEYBcV5vsAtldFNY_quo2l-tYpLUwXzEYIXWT3pB_SQ5MaAqm_EALw_wcB" target="_blank">Linda's Electric Quilters</a>, my go to for Signature Cotton Thread. The thread arrived last week but I had no occasion to use it until yesterday. When I removed the plastic sheathing from the cone (I did not use a sharp instrument to get that stuff off) I noticed that the perforations on the sheathing left residue on the thread and the thread was damaged. I tried to find some useable thread on that spool but the thread was deeply damaged. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjhU-8j_Si4VhrnprjsSR7x35h3Wlv9e-TGNQS5L82Ztlzrxu1gE_0ot_PiayfpNlA3Ye_0FChFOYO_pY6K-ZAb2qO7EFFH9bmBghNYleKFbXZDx43pC-cgN2yD47ia9STTa3_7mS5ek1PxQtm0M71wzXOBmYSFhpknQB5_g5p21phWuBxF-SvGiWy3xA=s800" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjhU-8j_Si4VhrnprjsSR7x35h3Wlv9e-TGNQS5L82Ztlzrxu1gE_0ot_PiayfpNlA3Ye_0FChFOYO_pY6K-ZAb2qO7EFFH9bmBghNYleKFbXZDx43pC-cgN2yD47ia9STTa3_7mS5ek1PxQtm0M71wzXOBmYSFhpknQB5_g5p21phWuBxF-SvGiWy3xA=s16000" /></a></div><p>F#ck. I spent a few minutes looking for another source for the thread because I wanted it in a hurry. Once I calmed down and realized that no one could get me the thread quicker than LEQ could, I emailed them and sent along this photo. Within an hour they had replied. "Dear Elizabeth, That is bad for sure." I was offered credit or a replacement. The replacement is on its way. 10/10 I recommend them. </p><p>I used zipper leaders on the Grace Frame I had eight years ago. I decided it was time to install zipper leaders on the Nolting. I have used Red Snappers and I have used pins to attach the backing to the frame. Red Snappers take up a bit of room in the throat, pinning takes up less. Zippers will enable Molly and me (sounds wrong, doesn't it?) to switch out our quilts. Brilliant (that's what the Brits say, innit? Oh I have been watching too much Graham Norton.) </p><p>How does one attach the quilt back to the leaders? Yes, we could use pins. Why not use a chain stitch? It is no more cumbersome than pinning and certainly less dangerous. Simply stitch one side of the zipper to each end of the quilt back and Voila!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh3oWScARdY0Epz3-oscbcVp098PJruDLHVe-uo_-6DO7WxAjnrpEImYSz2aJShcPwX7Aa7nBgDc92qfrIG5pMporXlBmeTRA-u9_xvBb27zvxl5aV6BZ62n607mJwMg_XnzOjVeixeIlH65jyCGK3PCkY4lEJ9jw0cxB9Wg28cHBS4TlTL_BorX0XNQg=s800" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh3oWScARdY0Epz3-oscbcVp098PJruDLHVe-uo_-6DO7WxAjnrpEImYSz2aJShcPwX7Aa7nBgDc92qfrIG5pMporXlBmeTRA-u9_xvBb27zvxl5aV6BZ62n607mJwMg_XnzOjVeixeIlH65jyCGK3PCkY4lEJ9jw0cxB9Wg28cHBS4TlTL_BorX0XNQg=s16000" /></a></div><p>I did stitch a 6 inch wide leader to the zipper that attaches to the take up bar. I suppose I could have stitched the zipper directly to the OEM canvas leader but I think that would have been tricky. I stitched a 6 inch wide leader to the zipper that attaches to the backing bar as well. That one is held to the OEM canvas leader with Red Snappers. I likely will stitch it in place eventually. </p><p> I don't know if the newer machines have chain stitch capability. I think it is a useful tool. True, the chain stitch uses a lot of thread, but it is a good way to use up old thread. Maybe you don't have a lot of old spools lying around. I do. They came with all those machines I "rescued" during my SMAD phase. I haven't thrown out that old thread. Now I have a perfectly respectful use for it. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEghpW_u30VL5JspZ7Ub90dnOvSlQeQV9umqcjpzlodlHdzwjX5mWEy9ImhO8N_eLogKwCil7m2e7OJAJoKQ9cwjRQ10WSP_AGO2knDxO4aDwE6z_9kXq6WnsH4R74zEugqY0pWqQkAge8KEe8J4nRAN8tNVYlHYJFA5IZN4U31t4niHz3S3SOwLhzH26Q=s800" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEghpW_u30VL5JspZ7Ub90dnOvSlQeQV9umqcjpzlodlHdzwjX5mWEy9ImhO8N_eLogKwCil7m2e7OJAJoKQ9cwjRQ10WSP_AGO2knDxO4aDwE6z_9kXq6WnsH4R74zEugqY0pWqQkAge8KEe8J4nRAN8tNVYlHYJFA5IZN4U31t4niHz3S3SOwLhzH26Q=s16000" /></a></div><br /><p>For more about chain stitch adaptor for this machine check this out: <a href="http://mysewingmachineobsession.blogspot.com/search?q=chain+stitch">http://mysewingmachineobsession.blogspot.com/search?q=chain+stitch</a>. Steven lit a fire early, before his dentist appointment, and he turned up the heat in the bedrooms. The furnace didn't kick in. It was 27 below zero. The furnace tech came within hours of our call, despite our insisting that this was not an emergency and others might need them more urgently. </p><p>He couldn't figure out what was wrong. He thought it was the circulating pump but replacing that didn't fix it. He called a buddy, slightly more experienced. A pipe was partially frozen. It's been leaking a while so I was using it dry. I now need steam. These OBW open seams require severe taming and steam is the way to go. I also bought a taylor's clapper to see if that will help. I haven't tried it out yet. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I got tired of sewing and decided to take a look at the iron. He is such a good dad that he offered to mend Badger's blanket. Badger is a horse. The blanket is huge. The straps have been torn off in several places. He was going to sew it by hand. I scoffed. </p><p>Me: Why not do it on the machine?</p><p>Him: The machine can't sew through all those layers of strap and the blanket too. I have mended many a tent by hand. I am sure I can do it. </p><p>Me: Have you looked at it?</p><p>Him: No. </p><p>Me: We should look at it. </p><p>So Molly came by with the horse blanket today. Kota and Theo were thrilled. I checked out the job.</p><p>Two straps were double thickness polyester webbing. One was single thickness. I got the 15-90 off the shelf, switched it out with the 201-1 that was in the treadle stand. Put a 110 needle in and some 40 weight thread (I had nothing heavier, it will be fine) and in less than an hour fixed all three straps. One was totally missing so I found a ring I had in my purse hardware and constructed a replacement strap. Easy Peasy.</p><p>There is no way Steven would have been able to get a hand needle through all those layers. Shit, the man has a really bad Dupuytren's contracture on his right hand. Sure, he used to be able to sew tents, but tents don't have three layers of webbing and horse blanket. </p><p>Anyway, I showed off. The 15-90 did the trick, no sweat. I'm not sure that the 15-91 would have done so well. That's why I love the treadle. I think you get better power with feet. I love the 201 but if I had to have only one machine, the 15-90 would be it. It's just so strong. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaB2a3h06Oxqnfgy_cmbjws_CbUozIKQMDd_azMP83Awh7aDwSRKKFqBcGsAXf6gDfBl7zy7wtzZu-AZ2EfH4WEcAyK504tKeeZBhCxXjo5eKYKSKzqg4kAlOHBuYS-6AE6jnzIbByv4si/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaB2a3h06Oxqnfgy_cmbjws_CbUozIKQMDd_azMP83Awh7aDwSRKKFqBcGsAXf6gDfBl7zy7wtzZu-AZ2EfH4WEcAyK504tKeeZBhCxXjo5eKYKSKzqg4kAlOHBuYS-6AE6jnzIbByv4si/s16000/Singer+15-90+1_21_22+copy.heic" /></a></div> PS. The good news is I have a 15-88 that was born as a treadle. In the before times, I had occasion to go to Montpelier for a meeting. I just so happened to be trolling Craigs list a few days prior to the meeting and saw a 15-88 listed in Barre. I thought I'd take a look since I was going to be in the area. I told Steven that the meeting started an hour before it did so that I could have the time to check out the machine. Yes, I lied. The machine was in a storage shed among other belongings. It did not turn over and I had no tools to take it apart. I didn't even bring a screwdriver. I was pretty sure that I could get it going. I offered less money than they were asking and came home with the machine. <div><br /></div><div>Steven wasn't home when I got home. I unloaded the machine and took it into the basement. Then I drove as far as I could up to the She Shed and unloaded the stand. I wasn't really hiding anything, but did Steven really need to know I had brought in another machine?</div><div><br /></div><div>So I got it running, hauled it up to the She Shed and told him all about it eventually. When my neighbor came over to check out the She Shed she saw the machine. I told her the story.</div><div><br /></div><div>Neighbor (who is married to a pastor): You lied to your husband ?</div><div>Me: Yes I did.</div><div>Neighbor: We'll pray for you. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><p></p><p><br /></p></div>Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07285943308096103980noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-133305403334770394.post-18259084743719635882022-01-20T09:52:00.000-05:002022-01-20T09:52:37.221-05:00It's usually the simple stuff.<p><span style="font-size: large;">I love my Singer 201-1. I love to treadle. Lately the treadle has been clanking. I think the original wooden pitman is failing. At one point Steven had crafted a beautiful wooden pitman for another treadle stand I rescued. I'm hoping he can do the same again. The clanking is driving me nuts. (See <a href="http://mysewingmachineobsession.blogspot.com/2013/05/custom-made-pitman-rod.html" target="_blank">here</a>)</span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">Me: Do you remember making that pitman rod for me years ago?</span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">S: Yes, I do. What happened to it?<br />Me: It went with the treadle stand when I sold that machine. I think I need a new one for my stand in the studio</span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">S: Well, let's take a look.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">Which meant that we both went downstairs and I got on my belly behind the stand to look at the pitman rod. There isn't much room behind the treadle stand. I store stuff back there. Extension cord wires hang down. I'm old and stiff. But I managed.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgFl-eNF1pUNxLIcN5GIljmCIUmOuIDo2HTGAQvmTDPtiYir_SN8EZMGF4COJ_7SVt-_iDim4UbjG6Drh08QycIIl7kpeqcwJS6nHXTjR2eX2cMd3YNSgtPEq2Ukig6AetY_AZUOOOtyBWVf9pcYFTBFJe0fwydYYnw6mU-c-96ER-GX5835EC494IHAg=s800" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgFl-eNF1pUNxLIcN5GIljmCIUmOuIDo2HTGAQvmTDPtiYir_SN8EZMGF4COJ_7SVt-_iDim4UbjG6Drh08QycIIl7kpeqcwJS6nHXTjR2eX2cMd3YNSgtPEq2Ukig6AetY_AZUOOOtyBWVf9pcYFTBFJe0fwydYYnw6mU-c-96ER-GX5835EC494IHAg=s16000" /></a></div><p></p><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;">Me: See? There's a small screw, maybe I can tighten it .<br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">Steve: No, I can't see. </span></p><div style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgF9S84ZL68yku5exAecJEPNv77x2AvYJ7xuW063xE7d4Ie9wxAZW6Phqdcf9p7y1FYs7VQAns40g09elYXtPmE5dxjTlpPoBvPFx0ho5rvgx8fXli7gVJqAwqZ-fm7DQSqUDQNCSWlz5n4MeEQmhjYwFcuU5wRsmiwc_87nwJBifQJLV5_m5dduSsXJw=s800" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgF9S84ZL68yku5exAecJEPNv77x2AvYJ7xuW063xE7d4Ie9wxAZW6Phqdcf9p7y1FYs7VQAns40g09elYXtPmE5dxjTlpPoBvPFx0ho5rvgx8fXli7gVJqAwqZ-fm7DQSqUDQNCSWlz5n4MeEQmhjYwFcuU5wRsmiwc_87nwJBifQJLV5_m5dduSsXJw=s16000" /></a></div><p style="text-align: left;"><br /></p></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;">It was awkward reaching the screw but I persisted (yes, my name is Elizabeth) and so did the clanking.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;">Steve: It looks like there is play side to side. I worked as hard as I could to get the house ready for them. That meant the basement, and my sewing space there, became the repository of all the clutter we live with day to day. My sewing space tends to be messy anyway because I did not inherit the tidy gene. My sister did. She hated it when we had to share a room in our formative years. I try, sometimes, to put stuff away. Two years ago. Sigh. </span></div><span style="font-size: large;"><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>I thought I might try to resurrect this blog. Let's see what happens. I am still nuts about sewing machines, though my SMAD has been in remission for a while. I did relapse this summer a bit. </span><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg7klinTs5pX5u5Qp3YUsRUgmUTKSjUFUDx_3Vty1DKjPY844jTSw0XYWMP2WHmIK12byXZ7l4vVa77U7LcZhwx4SovOcWBONulqPxy9mP81E_uKn-HS4EMNS6ufpt6QGSMrGTnQvDAsiI4xAXYF5xl9HZscGFasMdNyfLfb812F-m4rZcHDYFz5jdPsA=s800" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg7klinTs5pX5u5Qp3YUsRUgmUTKSjUFUDx_3Vty1DKjPY844jTSw0XYWMP2WHmIK12byXZ7l4vVa77U7LcZhwx4SovOcWBONulqPxy9mP81E_uKn-HS4EMNS6ufpt6QGSMrGTnQvDAsiI4xAXYF5xl9HZscGFasMdNyfLfb812F-m4rZcHDYFz5jdPsA=s16000" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-size: large;">I had to be in B'town and Milton isn't that far, really, just up 89 a bit and head west. Can't go too far, because Lake Champlain is in the way. I found the place, another slice of Vermont heaven, and the kind woman was selling the machine for her neighbor. The ad claimed it was a 237, which I knew was wrong. It is a lovely Singer 191J. Is it more closely related to the 15K110 or the 15-91? Probably the 15-91. The 191K is closely related to the 15K110. I could compare the underbellies. Maybe I will. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"> I love it this machine. That's a hexagon under the needle for my fourth One Block Wonder, that went off the the PNW last October. This photo is the best I have. It took too long for me to finish Four and Five; months and months. It is time for some self discipline and time away from Twitter Doom Scrolling. If you follow Maxine Rosenthal's instructions, which you don't have to, but if you do, you will get about 108 hexagons from your 4 plus yards of fabric. Of course, a bigger quilt (that queen plus I made for the DGD in the PNW) requires more yardage and more hexagons. I may make a large one again, but now, I am content with the smaller, not quite twin sized quilts. I started Number Six on Saturday and have over half of the hexagons sewn. Yep, that's right, my goal was to sew 18 hexagons a day and I have met my goal. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjWhJbkHYxI3S2LwUL920v0eUSfGUqR_OXfBTXXFgnjiuxlwdPMGYluafhnvsrjH31yVWA5ZHRHuti6U4gWZRhj4vQ1l-6QLciPCbwn1_9V9SJ2cyLivM4PefAd2MhRjZCI8w2vfY2W1aW21SqGfCfIvXrMyMtjiq9qFSwx5wdlIJ-W49O-KQbJTaAd4Q=s800" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="596" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjWhJbkHYxI3S2LwUL920v0eUSfGUqR_OXfBTXXFgnjiuxlwdPMGYluafhnvsrjH31yVWA5ZHRHuti6U4gWZRhj4vQ1l-6QLciPCbwn1_9V9SJ2cyLivM4PefAd2MhRjZCI8w2vfY2W1aW21SqGfCfIvXrMyMtjiq9qFSwx5wdlIJ-W49O-KQbJTaAd4Q=s16000" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgfJPbsZRIOEqX0zqSXMqJzwLLqPzi_BFBTFJZHsb7wt0bMtEs8ZO2AM-oYzQJwsCoQBSCT6REuMbe60i2EXzNsR__WV2iQ6jwSeQ_1mnIgp2XpKfpOe6nUpWPtvLLJIXnPkzam8wYDwjQDwOFPpIsz5P-cz8zMDp0LboLLVg5hcUfKoFPCRgBoqjR3VQ=s800" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgfJPbsZRIOEqX0zqSXMqJzwLLqPzi_BFBTFJZHsb7wt0bMtEs8ZO2AM-oYzQJwsCoQBSCT6REuMbe60i2EXzNsR__WV2iQ6jwSeQ_1mnIgp2XpKfpOe6nUpWPtvLLJIXnPkzam8wYDwjQDwOFPpIsz5P-cz8zMDp0LboLLVg5hcUfKoFPCRgBoqjR3VQ=s16000" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><span style="font-size: large;"> This process is different from piecing a quilt with a specific pattern, like a log cabin or HST or Nine patch. </div>
<span style="font-size: large;"> It seems that wearing a mask in the US during a deadly pandemic is a political statement. I honestly don't understand it. I am a nurse. I have worn a mask for hours at a time during surgery and when caring for patients in isolation. I never felt hypoxic or sick. So folks who claim that O2 levels drop and CO2 levels increase are full of shit.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I started making a three pleated mask in mid-March when a friend of a friend asked me to help make masks to send to her daughter in Michigan who was on the front lines there. I was absolutely appalled that there was not enough PPE. I was angry that they were making doctors and nurses re-use their N95s. I made twenty four masks right away. I had plenty of fabric and our masks were two ply; one cotton, the other flannel. We did not have elastic. I had ordered some from Amazon (don't judge) but it did not arrive for at least two weeks. We used elastic head bands, the narrow ones, for ear loops.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I made more than two hundred masks in the early days of the pandemic. My goal was to supply our town. I was an anxious, crazy, mess. I didn't eat, I didn't drink, I lost 11 pounds in two weeks. One day my left leg hurt. The next day my left foot hurt and my greater saphenous vein was ropey and hard. That superficial thrombophlebitis halted my sewing for three weeks. Had I been using my treadle, likely I would have avoided the clot. But I was using an electric machine and my left leg just sat there, hour after hour; day after day. In one position to balance myself, I guess.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">So I got really good at that three pleated mask. I also got mask burn out. I started trolling Facebook and Twitter. Don't judge. Oh and I watched Andrew Cuomo every day. Three times a week, I watched Governor Scott and Dr. Mark Levine report on WCAX. Cuomo is not reporting daily now and Vermont's pressers are twice a week. I watch in horror the reports from the south and west. We will need masks for a VERY LONG TIME. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Two days ago I saw a post on FB about a new mask pattern. I watched the video and I tried it out. I love it. It is my new favorite pattern. You can watch the video: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCNISyG6_SY">Summer Face Mask Video</a>. I think you should. The maker uses a pattern. I tried that. It works. I prefer to mark my fabric for the corners. You'll see.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I use three layers of fabric. One layer is 600 thread count cotton sheet. The other two are chiffon. Supposedly this combo has a good filtration for the very small aerosols that linger in the air indoors. You can read the article here: </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/what-material-is-best-for-homemade-masks#How-well-the-mask-fits-is-also-crucial">https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/what-material-is-best-for-homemade-masks#How-well-the-mask-fits-is-also-crucial</a>.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; box-sizing: inherit; color: #231f20; font-family: "Proxima Nova", -apple-system, system-ui, system-ui, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Roboto, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-weight: bolder;">The researchers found that a sheet of tightly woven cotton — of 600 threads per inch — plus two sheets of chiffon, made from polyester and spandex, seemed to make the most effective combination, filtering out 80–99% of the particles, depending on their size.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; box-sizing: inherit; color: #231f20; font-family: "Proxima Nova", -apple-system, system-ui, system-ui, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Roboto, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-weight: bolder;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Cut your fabric</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Small = 9.5 X 5.5 inches</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Medium = 10.5 X 6.5 inches</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Large = 11.5 X 7.5 inches. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I am actually guessing at these sizes because the video posts the sizes in centimeters. You can do your own arithmetic. The conversion is 1 in </span><span style="font-size: large;">= 2.54 cm.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Here is a screen shot from the video indicating what size triangle to cut from each corner. The edge of this pattern corresponds to the stitching line on my photo. Please note the copyright. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnCNULzSm9BkY6401U279ebWjk553mhiwSljBJrQr-z56Xr3AfNwONkaXydsyMRiokoOJsy7c7YgxDlBY-A7FSowMeiRdZyWQedQ-cKa-EHowJJlgjgzpsTu17PwDXE-E9lH7bDC02HzSt/s1600/_masksizes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnCNULzSm9BkY6401U279ebWjk553mhiwSljBJrQr-z56Xr3AfNwONkaXydsyMRiokoOJsy7c7YgxDlBY-A7FSowMeiRdZyWQedQ-cKa-EHowJJlgjgzpsTu17PwDXE-E9lH7bDC02HzSt/s1600/_masksizes.jpg" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I marked the cotton layer because it was easiest to write on. This mask is actually two of cotton and one of chiffon, as it was my prototype.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">SIZE MEDIUM</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsoMK1xBHx73jAWFgB3H1YVCDo7MhrJ0nkvnCxsNErvsgRKa_gPwOGsQ_w5ohUchIkhfHHswNTGCBY7-hRahBtyC_5EQzt29QcPBXh64JGMz93QD-eWEor283XC3_bxu7xYU9fOuxeb2ya/s1600/_stitching-lines-marks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsoMK1xBHx73jAWFgB3H1YVCDo7MhrJ0nkvnCxsNErvsgRKa_gPwOGsQ_w5ohUchIkhfHHswNTGCBY7-hRahBtyC_5EQzt29QcPBXh64JGMz93QD-eWEor283XC3_bxu7xYU9fOuxeb2ya/s1600/_stitching-lines-marks.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Stitch on the marking leaving about two inches in the center of one long side so that you can turn the mask right side out. Trim the corners cutting off the small triangle. You don't need to mark it. You can just trim the corner leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Press the edges inward along the stitching. I didn't do this at first. It really does help. </span><br />

It seems that I prefer my 201-1. The others are coming to grips with my favoritism. We all acknowledge that I love them all, but, truly one gets most of my attention. As machines, this doesn't seem to make much difference in how they respond to me. For that, I am grateful.<br />
<br />
This One Block Wonder was pieced on my 201-1. I did stitch the blocks together with the 201-2. I needed both hands to match the points. I sent this off to Canada to a friend who fell in love with the fabric when she visited last spring. Seriously, she walked around the Sewing Space (which may be re-named soon) hugging the fabric. As I was working on the quilt, all I could think of was Margie and how much she loved that fabric.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There was not enough color in this quilt for me. So, I bought another piece of fabric and went at it again with the triangles and hexagons. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha56efuZGqSgLuwiPTopLV36Rm5dafQlb_KAwBvOYJi-VC-YUlGIRKqwvE-jdvU3okmFn6HGvxKcIzTAfKowDmaxbIQEY1k5gSBvle3X438V_WLZuBlk_8_K8Nsl2oLleWbGCtPjapLrk5/s1600/OBW1-aka-Margie%2527s-quilt-front_edited-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha56efuZGqSgLuwiPTopLV36Rm5dafQlb_KAwBvOYJi-VC-YUlGIRKqwvE-jdvU3okmFn6HGvxKcIzTAfKowDmaxbIQEY1k5gSBvle3X438V_WLZuBlk_8_K8Nsl2oLleWbGCtPjapLrk5/s1600/OBW1-aka-Margie%2527s-quilt-front_edited-1.jpg" /></a> </div>
This was the result. The problem with this fabric; the repeat was 12 inches rather than 24. Still, it's finished and finished is better than perfect. Theo doesn't really care. He's just happy to be outside.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXG5ssKugLM5dViAooTobsUN8A74lEnBHQM2eDUCASDnWqUM1m8B7PJpEVQGYMdppWhzMtcQzkTcSbcKuuPJtQeXZGuG0MkFo6RbMcH-ptuUovqJoAKNEAUwYMk-LDg0-s78yu8RCd-Nva/s1600/OBWfrontwithTheo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXG5ssKugLM5dViAooTobsUN8A74lEnBHQM2eDUCASDnWqUM1m8B7PJpEVQGYMdppWhzMtcQzkTcSbcKuuPJtQeXZGuG0MkFo6RbMcH-ptuUovqJoAKNEAUwYMk-LDg0-s78yu8RCd-Nva/s1600/OBWfrontwithTheo.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is the original fabric. There is A LOT of white. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9eytez9C9fdQa0YEzZxMAYROe7X8O1rLIR13Zli_7cCsZUQZhlSQ77AFbYCTFlmyU6wCSozEik8K3QMORl-mB7ZXhG0Hc1RGU45E4BR_eXOL-cqYxHqRF9NngdS7pa8lkvtv7iKk1ea7W/s1600/OBWback.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="644" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9eytez9C9fdQa0YEzZxMAYROe7X8O1rLIR13Zli_7cCsZUQZhlSQ77AFbYCTFlmyU6wCSozEik8K3QMORl-mB7ZXhG0Hc1RGU45E4BR_eXOL-cqYxHqRF9NngdS7pa8lkvtv7iKk1ea7W/s1600/OBWback.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Compare it to Margie's quilt. These colors are more subtle and the repeat is much larger. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt1UI-i_noEHQD0OWnXR5opzxub1NjPN403GEABzWzFUNssuFMDenqQ0h_IT14h1BLxi_yVnEislHouMo64KLIgZcKi3xxL7n7V5aHvU-VKQ9ats2WBdGR9HJeox3sLWAbmJxIm2_I_YRD/s1600/OBW1-aka-Margie%2527s-quilt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt1UI-i_noEHQD0OWnXR5opzxub1NjPN403GEABzWzFUNssuFMDenqQ0h_IT14h1BLxi_yVnEislHouMo64KLIgZcKi3xxL7n7V5aHvU-VKQ9ats2WBdGR9HJeox3sLWAbmJxIm2_I_YRD/s1600/OBW1-aka-Margie%2527s-quilt.jpg" /></a></div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Because I wanted more color I bought this piece at Stowe Fabric and Yarn. Lots of color and a 24 inch repeat. After this, I think I will move on to something else. </div>

Perhaps even as long ago as 2016. I remember finishing the piecing during my chemotherapy drama. S. would come over and we would sew. I put it on the frame a couple of weeks ago and had intended to practice some swirls.<br />
<br />
I just couldn't get the rhythm of that design.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRKySNKROVxuObRr_qx-8iuTz_A5zThfv5b0LObEAK3Z096ZpEARylsRy3087DElLZ1tjNNTuC9K3oKPX83MqMibl_Niz9VZg_LOxErFPpKgKVqqSMu6dw8zvHXWULYRQmuwf1PpRDzq82/s1600/swirldrawn.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRKySNKROVxuObRr_qx-8iuTz_A5zThfv5b0LObEAK3Z096ZpEARylsRy3087DElLZ1tjNNTuC9K3oKPX83MqMibl_Niz9VZg_LOxErFPpKgKVqqSMu6dw8zvHXWULYRQmuwf1PpRDzq82/s1600/swirldrawn.gif" /></a></div>
I could draw it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSpN97EGnpbaRY1eec3idlGyhWI4jgNjJQG6uqQboAOkQwDgk5Pkci7zGRvI3cJiFtcls8kE558TKBjv2gCEHNuFRlm81cMfwQBfJgyXxGHFDynth71zuUzO9fzOcUfuQHBGFmgoNVnsGI/s1600/quiltedswirl.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSpN97EGnpbaRY1eec3idlGyhWI4jgNjJQG6uqQboAOkQwDgk5Pkci7zGRvI3cJiFtcls8kE558TKBjv2gCEHNuFRlm81cMfwQBfJgyXxGHFDynth71zuUzO9fzOcUfuQHBGFmgoNVnsGI/s1600/quiltedswirl.gif" /></a></div>
I simply could not quilt it.<br />
<br />
Ten times I tried. I ripped out ten swirls. I was not feeling the joy.<br />
<br />
So I gave up and went with feathers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmEeaFzC1LR1Q13XZBsdOFnX_om6a85VGO0GNRqKwL99KNCyHjzatDt0weHXDhfa95nGvk_42KlOJV8swHh-feljGDKelcUALuusT60zT6RSjw4FsvPHyxKPhDRarsgPr4ljxNaWkOP0Yu/s1600/IMG-2711.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmEeaFzC1LR1Q13XZBsdOFnX_om6a85VGO0GNRqKwL99KNCyHjzatDt0weHXDhfa95nGvk_42KlOJV8swHh-feljGDKelcUALuusT60zT6RSjw4FsvPHyxKPhDRarsgPr4ljxNaWkOP0Yu/s1600/IMG-2711.gif" /></a></div>
And pebbles with wavy lines along the seams.<br />
<br />
I like it.<br />
<br />
I alway ran the Nolting without the stitch regulator. After I finished the ruler work on Ellen's quilt I decided I needed more practice in stitch regulated mode.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next up is the UVM quilt. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDq4Ad-vC-tzpjzesgXRkoWl2GILgf1M8BafkcIm3tejq1RNwScW0OzMxOI8Y58JnXeIXN9LBkO8A-fh-Rlas1XrsCMggL0r-CGtbEIgnO09FvbMPdaxdtvZwuFo6iz4HX2GUVrgw8GYm-/s1600/UVMquilt.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDq4Ad-vC-tzpjzesgXRkoWl2GILgf1M8BafkcIm3tejq1RNwScW0OzMxOI8Y58JnXeIXN9LBkO8A-fh-Rlas1XrsCMggL0r-CGtbEIgnO09FvbMPdaxdtvZwuFo6iz4HX2GUVrgw8GYm-/s1600/UVMquilt.gif" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This hangs in the atrium at UVM Medical Center. It is a steel sculpture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_h6Dxi45PTDJU8xFFAlE3LouLDAQT352M26YHzhGrxVB1Y288vS-UN49cuDJSW0NCyIwoFDZJ8YZ1HXpy695225XIc7UqLe2h2UYpf6UISCptbCXtzd3A4FaozV5OmT4nTeCGi8uVQzug/s1600/Jude%2527squilt.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="687" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_h6Dxi45PTDJU8xFFAlE3LouLDAQT352M26YHzhGrxVB1Y288vS-UN49cuDJSW0NCyIwoFDZJ8YZ1HXpy695225XIc7UqLe2h2UYpf6UISCptbCXtzd3A4FaozV5OmT4nTeCGi8uVQzug/s1600/Jude%2527squilt.gif" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made this for my friend, J., who sent me the photo in February of 2018. I was not yet living in the 802. I found much of the fabric in The Quilt Zoo, next door to my abode of the time. The rest I hunted down on line. Finally I was satisfied with the blend. I wish I knew how to quilt it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So. I had occasion to need the walking foot to bind that scrappy quilt. The foot is a Viking and didn't fit on the Necchi. It fits beautifully on the Singer 237. I love the Necchi but it is handy to have a machine that will zig zag and accepts the walking foot. Sigh. I should consider off loading a few machines. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDKOeqnaekDUuwzAnj6BsP4UdnWyo7m0DQJBJV6MJERWRdcZGAF1eyrYgymidg_yzOQhMc4bjU2z0Yk0MRiggFuuEf32qX53gil7eiV90RcNiACtkmuzg9tlham9mXKh_Wh6m_tbMyXJL3/s1600/_SINGER237.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDKOeqnaekDUuwzAnj6BsP4UdnWyo7m0DQJBJV6MJERWRdcZGAF1eyrYgymidg_yzOQhMc4bjU2z0Yk0MRiggFuuEf32qX53gil7eiV90RcNiACtkmuzg9tlham9mXKh_Wh6m_tbMyXJL3/s1600/_SINGER237.gif" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I suppose I could start with the 15-90. It is a nice treadle but NOISY. True, it is strong, but I think the Necchi is just as strong. I could test them against each other. Maybe make a leather something or other. Good idea. Be kind. Be just. Just be kind. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

I imagine Wyoming is like that, too. Oh, North and South Dakota, Montana, and Rhode Island keep company with Vermont and Wyoming. I never knew. Nor did I care. Now that I live in the 802, we Vermonters refer to our state thusly, I am rather proud of it. "It" being one area code for the whole state. There is a twitter hashtag for it, I believe. I only troll on twitter. Off and on. That shit just depresses me.<br />
<br />
I love Vermont. "Way up by Canada," Ingrid declares every time I call her. She seems to think I am in some foreign country. So much so, that she thought I was too far away to manage her affairs, as if geography has anything to do with paying bills on line. My paternal grandmother was an eighth or ninth generation Vermonter. My father was born in Vermont. My grandfather, from Western Mass, had the typical Vermont sense of humor. "Have you lived here all your life?" someone once asked him. "Not yet." he dead panned. (Is that even a verb, Benjamin Dreyer?) I identify as a Vermonter. So I believe I belong here.<br />
<br />
So what does this have to do with sewing machines? Absolutely nothing. I painted the fence all day, after digging up sod around fourteen pickets. The black flies were merciful and I am almost halfway done. Now I am enjoying a Lake Hopper Hard Cider of Citizen Cider fame and 6.2% ABV. I haven't eaten in six hours. So I'm a bit tipsy and talkative.<br />
<br />
This morning I put on my painting pants and my Bernie 2016 tee shirt. OK. I slept in the shirt. (No, I am not a Bernie fan this time around. It is time for a female president) The Weather Channel predicted rain, high of 74. I don't think that the WC understands mountain weather. It was down right chilly when I set out to prep the fence for painting. I changed into a merino wool shirt, underneath a flannel shirt with a bright, red fleece on top. By 11 I had peeled off the fleece and flannel (damn, I am alliterative today, yes?) and changed into my Insect-o-shield tee. The sun was out and I was ready to PAINT.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTIq2ye2ysMJGAzPuJ-sgr-Owono5dy2PG6GgCCvCL_toYdmZqJ2cCWrWpqp1OhfzbuFmEGDShlYBXl9-yHAjYakLX2Rj5VnlAgRi29eVY0xmixr6Ti1fn1fhcFARrb8hwqpFGrFmx1aif/s1600/IMG-2615.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTIq2ye2ysMJGAzPuJ-sgr-Owono5dy2PG6GgCCvCL_toYdmZqJ2cCWrWpqp1OhfzbuFmEGDShlYBXl9-yHAjYakLX2Rj5VnlAgRi29eVY0xmixr6Ti1fn1fhcFARrb8hwqpFGrFmx1aif/s640/IMG-2615.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
This fence has 38 sections of fourteen pickets each. We built it last year. Pressure treated lumber needs a year to dry out. It was hot and dry enough last year that I could have painted it (actually we are using a solid stain) last fall. I didn't<br />
<br />
Want to get back to sewing machines? OK. I finally set up the Nolting 20 CLX in March. I put a practice sandwich on the frame and discovered that I could still quilt. I finished two UFOS and I even quilted a full sized quilt for a complete stranger. Mom was not supportive. She thought it was a bad idea. I agree. I doubt I could quilt for a money. I think it would take the love out of it.<br />
<br />
I met J. in the late summer of 2017 on one of my trips while Steven and I were in transition between NY and the 802. In February of 2018 she had occasion to visit UVM Medical Center. There she saw this steel sculpture entitled "The Fabric of Life." She texted me the photo and I set out to find fabrics to make a quilt.<br />

It took me until this past February to find the perfect collection. Now, I dd not search that whole time. It's just that the fabrics all came together this year.<br />
<br />

I found the backing fabric (on hanger, upper right corner of photo) in my stash. I'm pleased as punch.Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07285943308096103980noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-133305403334770394.post-72391806876512250492019-02-08T21:54:00.000-05:002019-02-08T21:54:15.837-05:00TWO NECCHISThe temperatures have been sub-zero in Vermont this winter. Our house in New York was one hundred years old. The windows were original, double hung, single pane with leaded glass on the top. I loved them. They were elegant and drafty.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3Ln1ehN3ylwx4OxNalvGKgpHanv0zl3AxjxWmwL072M9c157LMOp5lKX46ONeWIlaR8nYQxgJTHUIiMVQbiyWb-WFOvhMFrFAFo95hNssE30fIrg7bgVoavF55Ic2o7ym4GXCDZz0BOq5/s1600/_WOODSTOVE.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3Ln1ehN3ylwx4OxNalvGKgpHanv0zl3AxjxWmwL072M9c157LMOp5lKX46ONeWIlaR8nYQxgJTHUIiMVQbiyWb-WFOvhMFrFAFo95hNssE30fIrg7bgVoavF55Ic2o7ym4GXCDZz0BOq5/s1600/_WOODSTOVE.gif" /></a></div>
I made roman shades for them with Warm Window insulating fabric. We left the shades behind when we moved. That was likely a mistake. I never saw that the new owners hung them back up after we moved out. Too bad. I could have used that fabric.<br />
<br />
Window technology changed between 1920 and 1990. True, the casement windows in our Vermont house are double pane but the seal is gone. The weatherstripping has failed as well. So I did here what I did in New York. I made roman shades for the windows.<br />
<br />
I made three long narrow ones for the atrium door that leads to our deck.<br />

I've got a clouds and bird theme going on. This fabric reminded me a bit of fall. So I decided the next curtain would be winter. Today I almost finished it. Blue sky with cardinals on snowy tree branches<br />

I can tell that I will have to press out the top seam. It pulls a bit. Must be that the bottom tension was a bit tight.<br />
<br />
This curtain/shade is 74 inches wide by 70 inches high. Since it will draw up as a shade, I used the Super Nova Necchi zig zag setting to stitch 63 carbone rings onto the back side of the shade. It took all afternoon.<br />
<br />
I used the Necchi BU (as a treadle) to put the curtain together. It is strong and quiet. I think it is as strong as the Singer 15-90. It certainly is much quieter. That 15-90 clanks and clatters. Fun I have not when I sew with it. Can I pass it along? I don't know. I don't think so. I think that I will put some high shelves up and display my machines. That would make me happy. I could display the 15-90, 15-91, 201-1, 201-2, one of the 301s, the 221, a Kenmore or two, the hand crank, the 319. Good idea. <br />

The fabric slid under the presser foot of the BU as I was sewing this line of rings. In this picture it looks as if I am sewing with both machines. Not so.<br />

For some reason, Theo was desperate to get either behind me or underneath the machine this afternoon. I don't know why. No, I don't think it was because I was mourning my sister and worried about my mother. Though maybe. He got over it pretty quickly when I offered him a cookie. More than likely he was upset by Steven stomping around upstairs.<br />
<br />
Alice died April 7, 2018. I was supposed to go out to help with her SCT right after I retired. The last few weeks of work I was channeling my inner urbanite so that, somehow, I could tolerate the city. I had it all planned out. We would spend the spring and summer together in the windy city as she recovered. Then, after the requisite 100 days, we would come here and I would continue to help her get well. We would laugh and play with the pups. We would ride our bikes on the rail trail, take walks in the woods, paddle on the reservoir, and, maybe, even hike in the mountains a bit. We would go see Mom.<br />
<br />
Instead, I packed up all her stuff, sold her dwelling and brought her dog home. I won't ever get over it. Some days I feel as if she just died. The grief is sudden, deep, and awful. Then other days, like today, I could almost claim contentment. The promise of spring, and sewing help. Steven helps. The grandbabies and their parents help. The dogs help. My friends help. Looking at the mountains helps. It wasn't supposed to be this way. But now it is. <br />

Yesterday morning the wind chill was 30 below and while the guys had planned to work on the chimney from the roof down. They changed their minds when they got here. Yep. I was relieved. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Flue blocks are big and heavy as is the flue itself. Our "attic" is cold and there isn't a lot of room between the roof joists. I don't know how but they managed to set those blocks and the flue to within 6 inches of the roof. (You can't see the other person but trust me he is there. ) There is no choice now. To finish placing the other flue blocks they have to get on the roof and drop them in from above. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Today it was still sub-zero and windy again. Not a day to be cutting a hole in the roof and trying to set block. Instead, they finished up the pedestal and the hearth. </div>

The chimney is through the ceiling. Tomorrow they plan to take it through the "attic" and up through the roof.<br />
<br />
I don't know. NOAA predicts the high at MINUS SEVEN. They can't really work from below. That means that they have to work up on the roof. No real sun either. That's what saved us today. Solar gain.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt-zItsrBvWcKMt1o0BRkcIsDFNnmxfEzeU0H5eKodONIsGTDXDGUX5P-LqlkeZoYIoXfbCXAWNnVm5J1ctjFvizQoO4AceNF23vD28GKM9140lDirf99K_3oMnuMfVzXVZFXf2w3wv-vb/s1600/MOREPROGRESS.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt-zItsrBvWcKMt1o0BRkcIsDFNnmxfEzeU0H5eKodONIsGTDXDGUX5P-LqlkeZoYIoXfbCXAWNnVm5J1ctjFvizQoO4AceNF23vD28GKM9140lDirf99K_3oMnuMfVzXVZFXf2w3wv-vb/s1600/MOREPROGRESS.gif" /></a></div>
<br />
I hid out in the basement sewing most of the day. That's my plan for tomorrow. Otherwise I will be fretting about frost bite and wind chill.<br />
Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07285943308096103980noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-133305403334770394.post-21124754991862249452017-12-25T21:42:00.001-05:002017-12-25T21:42:23.506-05:00It all startedso innocently last spring. There was no heat in the new house. The gas line from the underground tank to the furnace leaked. The gas company would not unlock the tank until we fixed that leak. <br />
<br />
So we tried to stay warm with the fireplace.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
That didn't work. It burned the fuel we provided; some actual hardwood firewood and the gawdawful late century wooden towel bars and other fixtures from the bathroom. The heat went right up the chimney.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkPfNW967usBijV0DNUG_F0tiRHkLSLKAe5MJLk7m2Exoo7_T21eHOeuyoAmKLxOkAQscNC93-0eV9Dytzu-qpOPCMNnxDx62jk5jLV-uDitpG77QJoqpJC82ckiWRA35vbaHLtEHLAS_y/s1600/_thefireplace.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkPfNW967usBijV0DNUG_F0tiRHkLSLKAe5MJLk7m2Exoo7_T21eHOeuyoAmKLxOkAQscNC93-0eV9Dytzu-qpOPCMNnxDx62jk5jLV-uDitpG77QJoqpJC82ckiWRA35vbaHLtEHLAS_y/s1600/_thefireplace.gif" /></a></div>
Our Hearthstone Heritage wood stove was our primary source of heat in the old house. We barely burned fuel oil. According to the specs, it can heat up to 1900 square feet. Our old house was 1800 square feet with original, single pane windows and DRAFTY.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjA1vZObQEir-SBzSLDkrmCPEYmW5nKBL2YaMfZrJsu5WETvMRhGPcVWA9_KUwGM-TcPN6kleNfmytQabGQJVisLlC6E7HpChwxcbdXiieZsl5vLJmzkLfRFU6QZvIQ-S1mSwck_8m7_-yU/s1600/_WOODSTOVE.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjA1vZObQEir-SBzSLDkrmCPEYmW5nKBL2YaMfZrJsu5WETvMRhGPcVWA9_KUwGM-TcPN6kleNfmytQabGQJVisLlC6E7HpChwxcbdXiieZsl5vLJmzkLfRFU6QZvIQ-S1mSwck_8m7_-yU/s1600/_WOODSTOVE.gif" /></a></div>
The new house is super well insulated and 1200 square feet. We are pretty sure the Heritage is too big for the house. Originally we thought we would leave it behind. In the end, I just couldn't do that. So we brought it with us.<br />
<br />
Steven knows people who know masons. Nigh onto two months ago, Steven called Ryan who is renowned in these parts. He advised that he would be in touch. Two weeks ago he called. About to start a job in the "money is different ski resort town" near us after the first of the year, he had a window of two weeks and he could work our job in. We said OK.<br />
<br />
Demo began the next day.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU4hi7khqWGhflxr1BMsdWrQgogkYg-x6ipN5Aqvm63EkCzuk_RmpCpqYeW_LeDgbWJPgIyg6cso8LgBiWHQF9sn53aBquO_gWFenGDqbuFNeXOEaqnkuA97Ku3tbr2Nu1MUFgePUHSRQV/s1600/_FIREPLACESIGNATURE.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU4hi7khqWGhflxr1BMsdWrQgogkYg-x6ipN5Aqvm63EkCzuk_RmpCpqYeW_LeDgbWJPgIyg6cso8LgBiWHQF9sn53aBquO_gWFenGDqbuFNeXOEaqnkuA97Ku3tbr2Nu1MUFgePUHSRQV/s1600/_FIREPLACESIGNATURE.gif" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Steven pried the bead board off carefully. I removed the nails. We will use the materials for something else, somewhere. We were touched by the message left by the builders. Ev and Jollie's son built that fireplace for them shortly after they moved in thirty years ago. I am sure they loved it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Were it more efficient, we would have loved it, too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Before we started the project, I asked Steven why we were building a masonry (not masonary; no such word) chimney instead of just running stove pipe up through the roof. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After we got to this point in the demolition, I understood why. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Steven and I managed to get the stove off of the hearth. We even somehow managed to loosen the stove pipe. There was no way we were going to be able to move it more than that. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Luckily Ryan and his tender had to come by to receive the first load of materials.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So they helped (did it themselves using an appliance dolly) move the old fireplace on out. </div>

<br class="Apple-interchange-newline" />It might not be evident from the photos, but the living room is a mess. There are tarps on the floor and plywood where there aren't tarps. There is dust everywhere. The furniture is pushed against the walls. We should be wearing hardhats, seriously. I don't mind at all, though. This will be a beautiful thing. A very beautiful thing. </div>

That piece of insulation is covering a big hole in the ceiling. Steven cut through the sheet rock on Saturday when it was above freezing. The chimney will pass through the roof and Ryan will build a little tent on top of the house so he can work. Projected high Thursday is 9 below. I don't know how he will do it. </div>

I am unapologetic.<br />
<br />
We laid the plastic down this morning. I don't know why it took so long. Before we knew it, we were hungry and had no food in the house. We took a break, walked (yes walked) to the grocery store for provisions. There is some action on our street. A row of very tall trees have met their demise. Before the trees could take down the power lines, tree guys are taking down the trees. They have been here all week. Big tall pines, and smaller ones too, are all gone We will get more afternoon sun, for sure. Our sightline to the mountains will not be improved. Our neighbors will lose the barrier between them and the street. The power lines will be saved. Oh, and our other neighbor won't lose his house if the north wind knocks the trees over.<br />
<br />
So, after lunch we laid out the carpet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIatJ5hpWMGBlYxeZgwfjNh_j24mTjZfxRjS41VPPvtaUjf9FtNDwRhuWTgUve8jBovMWS-dWUU7es6V6sCO9uoyhxenOI41ZTAhDckNJSdRTSxiBnmUO1ddDQapESaub5xP5eIGguWngI/s1600/_RUGS.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIatJ5hpWMGBlYxeZgwfjNh_j24mTjZfxRjS41VPPvtaUjf9FtNDwRhuWTgUve8jBovMWS-dWUU7es6V6sCO9uoyhxenOI41ZTAhDckNJSdRTSxiBnmUO1ddDQapESaub5xP5eIGguWngI/s1600/_RUGS.gif" /></a></div>
And Steven cut the corner.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNjvghOi1GqwmOukAB6ZT7sQ80ewK_lqk5Lkz2m_ud47a05QjrKlQBs4gUptGiHtZcN0mz1H6NsyLE4gYI-j7h0EgZiI8xIvcn99FIvowgb7uT2wk3WfByvvjJB9hVqvA76dG4beCHG5dI/s1600/_CUTARUG.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNjvghOi1GqwmOukAB6ZT7sQ80ewK_lqk5Lkz2m_ud47a05QjrKlQBs4gUptGiHtZcN0mz1H6NsyLE4gYI-j7h0EgZiI8xIvcn99FIvowgb7uT2wk3WfByvvjJB9hVqvA76dG4beCHG5dI/s1600/_CUTARUG.gif" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Then we had to move more stuff so that we could free up the wool rug and put down the rest of the plastic.<span style="text-align: center;"> </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikDMtbkT-uZHAL2N0wMK53nvfaDFO77eP-JKy3e-1UesBqi4U1tUENfG4wsPQOPREXS4cVwKSe45iMT_sBU0k2_7jXCG0Z9u669oeYGREtY_YzKnjHGkQt8d3D3s21zAEyISfRiYNsrQH8/s1600/_WOOLRUG.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikDMtbkT-uZHAL2N0wMK53nvfaDFO77eP-JKy3e-1UesBqi4U1tUENfG4wsPQOPREXS4cVwKSe45iMT_sBU0k2_7jXCG0Z9u669oeYGREtY_YzKnjHGkQt8d3D3s21zAEyISfRiYNsrQH8/s1600/_WOOLRUG.gif" /></a></div>
Stay tuned for the update. We must schlep back to a Big Box Store in the Big City tomorrow to purchase the rest of the carpet. Then I will start settling in.<br />
<br />
I plan to tinker in the corner where the laminate flooring survived. (See top photo). So maybe, one day this blog will be about sewing machines again.Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07285943308096103980noreply@blogger.com4
